Yuen Woo-Ping and his brothers fill the film with stunning ‘drunken’ conflicts and duels.

‘Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog’ doesn’t compare to Sammo’s classics, but it’s diverting enough to persuade genre fans to catch it.

It might not be an essential Woo flick but one would be doing themselves an injustice in not checking out this early but highly entertaining action flick from the director.

This is one for die-hard fans of Lam Ching Ying or the Chinese comedy horror genre in general.

‘Kung Fu Vs. Yoga’ does not rank among the absolute cream of the genre, but there is definite enjoyment on offer here.

‘Lion vs. Lion’ is so frustrating because when it’s good, it’s superb. Sadly the focus tends to be on the comedic aspects of the film which range from the amusing to the banal.

Helmed by the then prolific Lo Wei and giving Wong Tao an early leading role, ‘Slaughter in San Francisco’ is some often cheesy but action-packed old school martial arts action.

It’s a pity that ‘The Seven Grandmasters’ is nearly a classic, but not quite. The reason it falls short and the reason why many of Kuo’s features stumble in the same way is the ending.

‘The Buddha Assassinator’ offers little new in terms of storyline or narrative twists. What it does offer though is some top-quality action from a very able set of actors and another classic stand-off between hero and villain.

All in all, another quality Sammo production that deserves a wider audience.

This film is a true classic, outdoing other period pieces ‘Drunken Master’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in China’. Go get it!

‘The Thundering Mantis’ is a three star film that earns a fourth for its remarkable ending and Leung Kar Yan’s virtuoso performance as the hero driven straight over the edge.
