Cast Member: Lau Siu-Ming

Any fan of wuxia films MUST see ‘A Chinese Ghost Story’. I can not give a higher recommendation for this veritable classic.

It’s worth watching, but will not go down as the best film that Hong Kong has produced in recent years – far from it in fact.

Despite the occasional bloody highlight, ‘Dr. Lamb’ is a tough film to recommend as it often feels like little more than a collection of brutal murders.

Michael Hui uses moments of slapstick, social conscience and satire in conjunction with his flawless timing.

‘Gift From Heaven’ is a low-key comedy, but a very watchable 90 minutes.

‘Kitchen’ is watchable, of course for Jordan Chan’s first-rate display, though it tends to languish in pretentiousness when a firmer hand would have been far more effective.

Though director Norman Law sets up a few interesting rivalries between the characters, the film tends to get too bogged down in its teen romance sub-plot.

There is quite a lot going on in ‘Re-cycle’ for both the eye and mind and while its perhaps a bit too ambiguous for its own good it’s probably a film best viewed a couple or several times to fully appreciate and digest.

This is the definitive Hong Kong action flick of the 80’s, easily on a par with ‘Police Story’ and should take pride of place in any fan’s collection.

Despite never straying towards originality and unlikely to win awards, there’s still an admirable mixture of action and drama to commend.

‘Swordsman’ is not as strong as its superior sequel and the aforementioned difficulties are all apparent, but it is still an ultimately rewarding film.

With an apparent allusion to the multi-layered swordplay novels of Gu Long and Louis Cha, this is a story that revels in its twists and hidden motives.
