Niki Caro to direct Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’

Disney has chosen Niki Caro to helm their upcoming live-action adaptation of the story of Chinese heroine Hua Mulan.

New Zealand-born Caro previously worked with Disney on the sports drama ‘McFarlane, USA’, and was reportedly in the running to helm the Marvel superhero flick ‘Captain Marvel’. While she may not exactly be a household name, she has already received huge critical acclaim for her work on films such as ‘Whale Rider’, ‘North Country’, and ‘The Vintner’s Luck’.

Legendary Hong Kong producer Bill Kong has also been bought on board as executive producer, while ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Jurassic World’ screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are rewriting Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek’s screenplay.

Based on a Chinese folktale, ‘Mulan’ tells the story of a young Chinese maiden who learns that her weakened and lame father is to be called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he would never survive the rigours of war in his state, she decides to disguise herself as a man and join in his place.

The new ‘Mulan’ is set for release on November 2, 2018, but it will have competition, as Sony Pictures have announced that they will be doing their own Hua Mulan film with ‘Game of Thrones’ director Alex Graves.
