Despite a few criticisms, Yee has crafted a capable film with a tender heart, something not easy to achieve in the cynical world of film-making.

Feng’s achievement is that his work here is a delightful romance while also successfully juggling numerous other sub-plots.

‘Embrace Your Shadow’ manages to be moving while sticking doggedly to established clichés, perhaps an oxymoron, but an achievement nonetheless.

‘Tracing Shadow’ – though by no means as bad as that tirade – does fall foul of the flaws of the weaker films rather than embrace the qualities of the greats.
