What are you reading?

Just recieved my (post) xmas pressie - "The Ultimate Guide to Martial Arts Movies Of the 1970's" by Dr. Craig Reid. Very ipressed so far from flicking through and having a quick read. A few ommissions I don't agree with but recommended to you guys.

I hadn't heard of that book, but it sounds very interesting. What are the most obvious omissions?

So far - Knockabout, Warriors Two, Last Hurrah For Chivalry, Buddhist Fist, Hapkido. But it has got some obscure US, Japanese and Indian titles in also. Only read a bit of it so far but am very impressed and well glad I have it. It's a lovely book and It's highly recommended. It gives info for each film inc a synopsis as well as cast etc and alternative titles. it includes chinese characters of the titles also. Added to this a large number of colour stills. it's really nicely done.
I was familiar with Dr. Craig Reid from the kungfumagazine.com forum and his part in Red Trousers (w/ Robin Shou). He's a friend of John Kreng also. Be good to see if Stoo and the POF guys could interview him or something.
Well worth £15.

Wow, some fairly big omissions. If we ever do a Far East Films book, they'd have to be in it.

Considering the alternative is nothing, Mr Reid's book is excellent. It's wonderfully written and very insightful. I'm currently trying to get a Q and A with the author along with Mr Kreng with his book too. I also recommend Patrick Galloway's books on chanbara as the best you can get on martial arts cinema along with Chasing The Dragon and Kung Fu Cult Masters by their authors. Umm can't recollect names at mo.

I'm definitely thinking of picking this up as a good examination of the genre is long overdue. And the author knows the genre very well, so it'll be nice to reading something intelligent on what is still called 'chop sockies' by a lot of newspapers!

I have it sitting around waiting for me to read. I've been neglecting the reading a bit lately. I've just started 30 Days Of Night, but I'm not overly impressed so far, and I've got Batman: The Killing Joke to read next, but as it's a reference book I guess I could start on Dr Reid's book also.

I still have my copy of that, it used to be something of a bible for me back in the old VHS days. I wonder whatever happened to Rick Baker, after Eastern Heroes folded he seemed to pretty much vanish.

I like that book. I spent too much on 'Deadly China Dolls' it's pretty poor as a book to read. Baker wrote some of it.

I just bought a copy of "The Essential Guide To Hong Kong Movies" by Rick Baker & Toby Russell on Amazon. They have one copy there that someone is asking over £130 for and they want to charge post and packing too!

I paid £17 for mine inc. postage. From Mr Russell himself. I did buy some dvd's from his stall at camden market a few years ago.
