Worst sequels...

Postby ASaroch on Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:00 pm

...I open this up to all Asian cinema, but my first choices are especially relevant to HK film. Please add to the list so we can warn others...

IRON MONKEY 2

I've only just watched this - I've been putting off for years since the VHS came out and have finally caught up with it.
Perhaps it would have been even worse had I watched this on its release (so soon after the release of the classic first film and during the last Golden Age of HK cinema) but it is still pretty bad. It's strange seeing Donnie Yen (albeit in a smaller role) in pretty low-grade pulp cinema now that he's appearing in big budget, widely acclaimed martial arts films. He throws in a few good kicks but looks a bit awkward to be there while the main characters are a brother/sister dup who are indescribably annoying. Lots of mugging to the camera, lots of undercranking for the action and simply weird moments.

Iron Monkey 2 was awful. I only ever saw it once on VHS many moons ago but that was more than enough. It almost felt like a cut and paste job because it was so badly disjointed and confusing.

Speaking of cut and paste jobs, a vote for worst sequel would surely have to go to Fearless Hyena 2. After all, the film isn't really a complete film at all, it's just a hotchpotch of re-used footage and bad stunt doubles.

Another obvious choice would have to be Black Mask 2. Even though the first movie was never a masterpiece, it certainly looks like one compared to the sequel. Shame really because it has a half-decent cast (Andy On, Scott Adkins, Kelly Lin) but it was the evil Tsui Hark that turned up to direct and he ended up making a Saturday morning kids special.

Ah, Black Mask 2! What went on there? An utterly useless piece of celluloid.

In relative terms, Drunken Master III

To go from DM1 (classic) to DM2 (classic!) to DM3 (erm...)

Good call, I have no idea what the Pops was thinking when he cobbled that mess together.

While perhaps not the worst, I'd probably have to throw one or both of the 'Ong Bak' sequels into the pile. A far too ambitious attempt at upgrading the style of the first movie, with even Tony Jaa's moves getting old really quickly. I hope the Tom Yum Goong sequel doesn't go down the same path.

I didn't mind Ong Bak 2 though I haven't caught up with the third one yet which I hear is the worst.

I keep thinking that I need to watch DMIII again just to see if it is quite as bad as I remember. Perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment.

We should get together and do an audio commentary for it, that would certainly be interesting :?

you must have too much spare time. One Raped by an Angel is purgutory itself, all the sequels is like poking yourself in the eye repeatedly.
