Best Animated Film?

Postby ASaroch on Sat Aug 22, 2009 5:41 pm

One for the experts like Phil and Mike I think. Not really my genre of choice, but I'm strangely proud to see Ponyo getting even more rave reviews. However, what would everyone consider the very best Japanese animated film, Ghibli or otherwise, and why?

For me, Akira, hands down. So much effort went in to every aspect of that movie and when it came out it was a genuine shock at how good it looked. Paprika, which seems to have disappeared without a trace, is also a phenomenal looking film (the only film that looks good on Blue Ray).

For me, the two greatest Japanese animated films are both Ghibli, but neither are Miyazaki directed. Only Yesterday is the ONLY animated film i've ever seen that leaves me noticing no difference between it and a live action movie. It's a beautiful story, perfectly told.

Whisper of the Heart is my second favourite, a little more fantasy perhaps, but still within the realms of realism enough for it to resonate on a huge level.

I adore Paprika. The visuals and audio are spectacular and the story is a lot of fun.

Wow that's tricky, narrowing it down to one film from any genre is always very difficult. I'd say a number of the Ghibli films like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro and Castle Of Cagliostro would definitely make it into my top ten. I'd also probably have the likes of Akira, Fist Of The North Star, Ghost In The Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion in there as well. I'll leave it at that for now or I'll be going on for hours...

Thinking on it. I don't know the English title but my favourite Ghibli movie is about a pig that flies planes, lit. title is 'The Red Pig' in Japanese. hilarious and a real boisterous adventure. Not recommending it for best animation but it seems when people mention Ghibli, they never mention this one.

Only Yesterday is great.

That sounds interesting. I must confess to not falling in love with 'Spirited Away'. I really tried to though.
