Perfect Catch - The U.S. remake of 'Fever Pitch' only about baseball :o Not too bad, but not as good as the Colin firth original (even though that featured the dreaded 2-1 loss to Arsenal at Anfield that haunted by childhood).

The Dark Knight

Dark, violent and totally enthralling. It gives as much time to it's characters as it does to it's action scenes. Aaron Eckhart and Christian Bale are both good but it's Heath Ledger who really steals the film. A rare case of something living up to it's hype, best comic book movie ever.

best comic book movie ever

Best disappearing pencil trick ever too...

'Shrooms' - I almost never turn films off halfway but this Irish/US teen horror film was so shockingly bad that it went off about forty minutes in. Rubbish.

'Silk' - a chinese made horror / sci-fi mix that works pretty well. A group of scientists invent the 'menger sponge' which allows them to capture ghosts - cue a creepy looking 'Ju-On' like boy and long haired women. Sounds lame and tired but it's actually quite fun.

'The Dark Knight' - If only this was a period piece and the hero wasn't costumed, there'd be no doubt where the Oscar next year would be going. Very dark, bleak yet an absolute masterpiece. A comic book adaptation of this calibre deserves to be appreciated as a great work of cinema rather than the rather condescending appreciation as the best of its narrow niche (which of course I fell into by mentioning it was a comic book adaptation). Heath Ledger is as superb as the hype implies, but a mention should also go to the excellent Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. A truly tragic character whose unravelling before our eyes is very upsetting to watch.

I make it a rule never to turn off a film too..... but I must confess I came the closest ever with "Shrooms". A magnificent 0/5 of a movie. :o

"Once Upon A Time In China 4" 2.5/5

This fourth film in the series is the first without Jet Li, but it has to be said that Chiu Man Chuck does a fine job taking up the mantle of playing Wong Fei Hung. Shame the magic of the earlier films is lost to bucket loads of action, a lot of which is wire assisted to the extreme. Admittedly there are a few laughs but the plot has been done to death. Also, dare I say, there is way too much Lion Dancing in this film. I'm quite partial to it in small doses, but this is way over the top.

I was sure i'd watched this before...but i couldn't remember any of it! Duuuuh. Can't believe this has been sitting on my shelf for so long. I'm glad i watched it today. It's been a rainy day and this was the perfect antidote!

Shamo (2007)

I don't know anything about the manga but some things just wasn't working for me, especially the character build-up which was too underdeveloped and confusing. As a result, you lose faith in believing most (if not all) of the roles as they are told. But I'll let it slip away for few actors (Francis Ng particularly, he's an awesome actor as always) because their acting made up for that. As for the fights (designed by Jack Wong), apart from the ring matches they are short and consists mostly of brutality and grittiness which some might not appeal to, but which in context otherwise DOES the job (not to mention that they are captured in a good way). The movie has good action but it could've been better in terms of story/character development. It's worth a shot anyway.

2.5/5
