Karena Lam Quits Showbiz
Hong Kong-based actress Karena Lam has reportedly decided to quit the entertainment industry. After completing her contract at the end of last year, Karena has now tied up all of her affairs and returned to studying in Canada. Her last roles were in the romantic drama 'Lover's Discourse' and the 3D 'Don Quixote'.
Lam was originally discovered by a talent scout from Taiwan in 1993 when she working in her Vancouver family restaurant. The scout persuaded her to fly to Taiwan that Christmas for a singing audition in the hope of securing a professional contract. The audition was a success and she later went on to release two albums, her debut album in 1995 and her second album later in 1999. However, both were only met with moderate success.
Real stardom arrived when Karena made her film debut in 2002. She appeared in three successful Hong Kong films in the same year; 'Tiramisu' directed by Dante Lam, 'July Rhapsody' directed by Ann Hui, and 'Inner Senses' directed by Lo Chi Leung. She then went on to win Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer for her roles in 'July Rhapsody' (at the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards) and 'Inner Senses' (at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards).
Despite going on to put in a number of other impressive performances, Karena's career seemed to take a noticeable dip after three relatively unsuccessful outings in 2008. At this time, it is not known whether she has chosen to leave the industry altogether or is just taking a break.
