The Barbican Centre Hosts 'Girlsworld'

Throughout September/November, the Barbican centre in London will be hosting 'Girlsworld: Women in Contemporary Japanese Cinema'. The series will showcase the diverse representation of women in 21st century Japanese cinema, different styles of storytelling and design, and debut films from female directors.
The line-up will include the following:
Nana - 21 Oct 10 / 18:00 A delightful coming of age tale of friendship, this fashion-rich buddy movie is set in Tokyo’s rock music scene.
Instant Swamp - 24 Oct 10 / 13:00 Modernity meets myth in this quirky comedy from Miki Satoshi, the director of 'Turtles are Surprisingly Fast Swimmers'.
Lala Pipo: A Lot Of People - 4 Nov 10 / 20:45 A vibrant, candy-coloured romp through the gutters of Tokyo’s sex industry.
Kamikaze Girls - 6 Nov 10 / 23:00 With cult status in Japan, this dazzling onslaught of images, special effects live action and animation is a fantasy-laced garish joy ride following the relationship of two miss-matched girls.
Memories Of Matsuko - 13 Nov 10 / 14:00 Billed as the Japanese Amélie, this beguiling tragic fairytale blends a touching human drama with energetic offbeat comedy and the occasional spectacular (Bob Fosse-like) production number.
Sakuran - 14 Nov 10 / 14:00 Photographer Mika Ninagawa indulges her vivid sense of colour with the luscious traditional styling in this heart-warming tale, with eclectic soundtrack from pop diva Ringo Shiina.
