When Police Officer Piao (Bill Tung) begins investigating an underground drug smuggling ring, he puts his nose where it isn't required and winds up getting himself killed. His death is then staged to look like a suicide so when he arrives in heaven Piao is naturally restless and demands retribution. His requests are granted and he is give the power to haunt Hsing (Chow), a rookie cop who he must communicate with to help solve his murder. However, Hsing will only agree if he gets something in return so Piao offers to help him get a girlfriend and a promotion for his troubles. With Piao's old partner (Fong) completing the line-up, the three set out to bring the criminals to justice with the help of a little supernatural wizardry.

'Look Out, Officer!' could have been a fairly routine Hong Kong comedy if it weren't for the inclusion of Stephen Chow, Bill Tung and Stanley Fong. All three actors are renowned for their entrances into the comedic genre and its interesting to see them combine at a time when Tung and Fong were clearly on a downward spiral from the 80s whilst Chow's career was just beginning. The film does provide some solid humour for all concerned with Chow playing the unusual role of the straight man whilst Tung gets to have all the fun as the cheeky ghost. The gags are thick and fast, mainly consisting of your standard slapstick but they are made all the more amusing by the ropey special effects and wirework that are synonymous with films from this era.

All in all , 'Look Out, Officer!' provides no real surprises but it is light hearted fun and displays a little of that 80s HK humour that we all know and love so much. |
