Action Member: Brandy Yuen

Yuen Woo-Ping and his brothers fill the film with stunning ‘drunken’ conflicts and duels.

It’s very strange how such a well-polished and highly entertaining film has come under such criticism from some Hong Kong film fans.

Many of the fight sequences are powerful and realistic, and there is a good balance between cinematic choreography and outright simple bloodshed.

Considering they both draw inspiration from the same source, it’s no surprise that ‘Legend Of A Fighter’ often feels a little too similar to ‘Fist Of Fury’.

Donnie Yen takes on a role similar to the one he played in ‘Drunken Tai Chi’ and once again shows how effortless it is for him to combine incredible physical aptitude with a pleasing screen persona.

There is not as much fighting as older Sammo films, but what is on show is up to his modern-day best – also showcasing Sammo’s last great physical performance.

The final reel is raw power and energy as Sammo takes on a small army of goons before meeting his match in Billy Chow.

The cast is packed with the usual gallery of stars that one associates with a Sammo production and of course the action (when it happens) is expertly choreographed by the man himself.

There’s some well-developed comic moments that certainly raise the odd smile, while the atmosphere is infectious.

With a predictable script and some seriously under-par actors, it was never really going to amount to much more than a set of average fight sequences.

This is a real love it or hate it kind of movie and while I found it to be extremely amusing and entertaining, I have only given it 3 out of 5 as it is not likely to be viewed more than a couple of times.

Whilst fans of the Shaw Brothers back catalogue will definitely find ‘The Postman Fights Back’ comfortable viewing, there is still enough fresh material and wackiness here to make the film worth watching.
