Anime Update #1

By   |  Mar 1, 2018

Following the popularity of Isaac’s Weekly Wrap-Up, I thought I’d steal borrow the idea for a regular rundown of the latest anime news. Here’s the debut edition…

• After a 5 year hiatus, it’s been confirmed that a third season of the sports/romance/drama anime ‘Chihayafuru’ is in the works. Based on a manga by Yuki Suetsugu, this rather unique series follows a school girl who is inspired by a new classmate to take up competitive karuta (a Japanese card game).

• With the release of ‘Tokyo Ghoul:re’ just around the corner (April 3), the official website has just announced the artists who will be responsible for the theme songs. The opening theme will be a song called ‘asphyxia’ by the band Cö shu Nie, while the ending theme will be ‘HALF’ by Ziyoou-vachi.

• On a similar note, the music artists involved in season 3 of the excellent ‘My Hero Academia’ have also been confirmed. Premiering on April 7, the opening song for the series will be performed by UVERworld and the ending will be by miwa.

• Osamu Eya and Kaiji Kawaguchi’s ‘Kubo Ibuki’ manga will be getting a live-action film adaptation in 2019. Set in a fictional time period when military power is the dominant force, the story revolves around the building of a new Japanese aircraft carrier.

• The first trailer has been released for the upcoming 22nd Detective Conan animated movie, ‘Zero no Shikkounin’ (‘Zero the Enforcer’). The film finds our vertically challenged hero attempting to prove the innocence of a man accused of blowing up a Tokyo Summit facility. It is due for release in Japan on April 13, 2018.

• Anime studio CoMix Wave Films will be collaborating with Haoliners to release an anthology of three shorts collectively titled ‘Shikioriori’ (Poem of Seasons Woven Together) this summer. Utilising the theme of food, clothing, and shelter, the three shorts will be titled ‘Hidamari no Chōshoku’ (Sunny Breakfast), ‘Chiisana Fashion Show’ (A Small Fashion Show), and ‘Shanghai Koi’ (Shanghai Love), and will all be set in three different Chinese cities.
