
Blu-ray & 4K UHD release: ‘Ran’

StudioCanal are bringing the 1985 Japanese epic historical action drama ‘Ran’ (乱) to UK Blu-ray and 4K UHD on July 21, 2025.
Co-written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, the film follows an ageing Sengoku-period warlord who decides to hand over his empire to his three sons, but he underestimates how the newfound power will corrupt them. The cast includes Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu, Daisuke Ryu, and Mieko Harada.
Synopsis: ‘Ran’ tells the story of Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai), an ageing warlord who, after spending his life consolidating his empire, decides to abdicate and divide his Kingdom amongst his three sons: Taro (Akira Terao), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu). This leads to a brutal and bloody war between the brothers for absolute power of the kingdom.
