
Blu-ray release: ‘Picture Bride’

Imprint Films are bringing the 1995 American-Japanese romantic drama ‘Picture Bride’ to Australian Blu-ray on September 24, 2025.
Co-written and directed by Kayo Hatta, the film follows a young Japanese woman who becomes a picture bride in Hawaii, facing an older husband and harsh plantation life while finding strength through new bonds. The cast includes Youki Kudoh, Akira Takayama, Tamlyn Tomita, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Yoko Sugi.
Synopsis: In 1918, Riyo, a young Japanese woman, becomes a picture bride and travels to Hawaii to marry Matsuji, a sugarcane plantation worker, only to find him much older than the photo she was shown. Struggling with the harsh realities of plantation life and her husband’s initial coldness, Riyo forms a bond with Kana, another picture bride, and navigates challenges under the oppressive field supervisor. Through personal loss, cultural traditions, and her growing resolve, Riyo finds strength and connection, ultimately embracing her new life and community.
