Filipino director Lav Diaz has won the Golden Lion Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival for his latest, ‘The Woman Who Left’.
The black and white film tells the story of a wrongly convicted school teacher struggling to cope with the outside world after 30 years behind bars. It runs for nearly four hours, which is relatively short by Diaz’s standards.
“This is for my country, for the Filipino people; for our struggle and the struggle of humanity,” said Diaz after winning the prestigious Award.
