Hong Kong actor Norman Chui dies at 73

Hong Kong actor Norman Chui Siu-Keung (徐少強) has passed away at the age of 73. The news was confirmed by Tenky Tin Kai-Man, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Film Workers Association, who revealed that Chui died from esophageal cancer on September 1.

Born in Hong Kong in 1950, Chui grew up and attended school in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon. After graduating high school, he worked as a debt collector for a foreign bank before switching to the accounting department. He found the work boring and in 1972, he decided to join the third training class of the Shaw Brothers Film Company.

Following his graduation, Chui’s first film appearance came in 1973’s ‘The Savage Five’ directed by Chang Cheh. He continued to appear in mainly minor movie parts, but it was his appearance in a 1976 adaptation of ‘The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants’ for Rediffusion Television (now ATV) that really got him noticed. Rediffusion was so impressed with his work that they wanted to offer him a full-time contract but they weren’t able to get it over the line. However, Chui continued to work on loan from Shaw and appeared in several popular shows including ‘The Man’ (1977), ‘The Sword’ (1977), and ‘Reincarnated’ (1979), mostly playing martial arts heroes.

As his popularity grew, so did his participation in movies and he continued to play mainly heroes in films such as ‘Clan of Amazons’ (1978), ‘The Challenger’ (1979), ‘The Loot’ (1980), ‘Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils’ (1982), ‘Bastard Swordsman’ (1983), and ‘Duel to the Death’ (1983). Bizarrely, the 1990s saw him make the switch to playing mostly villains, with memorable appearances in ‘King of Beggars’ (1992), ‘Wing Chun’ (1994) and ‘What Price Survival’ (1994).

With Hong Kong film and television work on the decline in the late 1990s, Chui made the move to Beijing and continued to work mainly on Chinese productions.

Sadly, it has also been reported that his current wife, who was a dancer 30 years his junior, passed away from a heart attack while making preparations for his funeral.

Norman Chui was a huge talent who appeared in over a hundred film and television works. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
