‘Shen Jilan’ (申纪兰) is a 2023 Chinese biographical drama directed by Hasi Chaolu.

Based on the life of Chinese politician Shen Jilan, the film follows her journey to participate in her final National People’s Congress. The cast includes Yue Hong, Yao Bingrong, Su Li, Wang Zhuo, Zuo Erlong, and Suo Mu.

Synopsis: The film finds 91-year-old Shen Jilan (Yue Hong), who is seriously ill, insisting on attending the National People’s Congress, and tells her story of mobilizing women to promote equal pay for equal work, leading people to plant trees and forests, and developing local enterprises to help people get rid of poverty and become rich. The story highlights Shen Jilan’s “loyalty to the Party”, “people’s representative for the people”, “peasant identity”, “never detached from labour” and “hard work”. [© Far East Films]
