‘Frontline’ (フロントライン) is a 2025 Japanese drama directed by Kosai Sekine.

Based on a true story, the film revolves around a group of volunteer medical professionals who are dispatched to deal with the first Japanese outbreak of COVID-19 aboard a luxury cruise ship. The cast includes Shun Oguri, Tori Matsuzaka, Sosuke Ikematsu, Yosuke Kubozuka, Yuki Sakurai, and Nana Mori.

Synopsis: On February 3, 2020, a luxury cruise ship carrying 3,711 passengers and crew arrived at Yokohama Port. One passenger who disembarked in Hong Kong was confirmed to be infected with COVID-19, and more than 100 people on board reported symptoms. Japan does not have an organisation that specialises in large-scale virus response, so the DMAT, a volunteer medical organisation specialising in disaster medical care, was suddenly deployed. They put their own lives at risk against the virus, which has no known cure, and continue to fight until all passengers have disembarked. [© Far East Films]

‘Frontline’ opens across Japan on June 13, 2025.
