‘Scholars Under Fire’ (坪石先生) is a 2025 Chinese biographical drama directed by Gan Xiaoer.
The film tells the story of a group of prominent educators who persevered in running schools amidst the flames of war. The cast includes Tse Kwan-Ho, Yan Qiuyue, Wang Hongwei, Jiang Zhongwei, and Ye Yufei.
Synopsis: In the winter of 1944, as Japanese forces threaten Pingshi in northern Guangdong, National Sun Yat-sen University faces an uncertain future after relocating from fallen Guangzhou. Huang Jiyu, a dedicated department head in his sixties, strives to protect his students, seeing them as the hope for the nation’s survival. When he encounters Qiu Yang, a gifted student from Hong Kong, Huang takes him under his wing, guiding him through the chaos of war. As the enemy closes in, the university community grapples with displacement and danger, testing their resilience and commitment to knowledge and country. [© Far East Films]
