‘The Zen Diary’ (土を喰らう十二ヵ月) is a 2022 Japanese drama written and directed by Yuji Nakae.
Based on the essay ‘Tsuchi wo Kurau Hibi’ by Tsutomu Mizukami, the film revolves around a writer living in the mountains who is still unable to bury the ashes of his deceased wife. The cast includes Kenji Sawada, Takako Matsu, Naomi Nishida, Toshinori Omi, and Fumi Dan.
Synopsis: Writer Tsutomu (Kenji Sawada) lives alone in a mountain cabin in Nagano. He collects fruits and mushrooms from the mountain and grows vegetables in a field. Every day he cooks his meals with these natural ingredients. By doing that, he can feel the flow of the seasons and he writes his book. Sometimes, his editor/girlfriend Machiko (Takako Matsu) visits him. They cook with seasonal ingredients and eat together.
