Ten months ago, Inspector Yamato Kansuke of Nagano Prefectural Police was shot and caught in an avalanche while pursuing a suspect. After recovering, he was left with no memory of the incident. Now, investigating a break-in at Nobeyama Observatory, Yamato and Detective Yui Uehara team up with Kogoro Mouri, who is seeking answers following the murder of his former colleague Koji Sametani. With Conan and friends in tow, they begin to unravel a tangled web of vengeance tied to a past robbery, racing to stop a cunning culprit pulling strings from the shadows.

It’s been years since I last caught up with Conan Edogawa’s pint-sized sleuthing, so diving into ‘Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback’ felt like a nostalgic leap back in time. Helpfully, it includes a quick recap of Conan’s origin that eased me back in before the film dives into a snowy mystery tied to Inspector Yamato’s haunted past and a deadly avalanche. With crisp animation and a more epic cinematic scope than the series, the film is a slick adventure packed with (occasionally predictable) twists and short bursts of action, including a notable one-on-one fight involving Ran. As it is crowded with characters, Conan himself does feel somewhat sidelined at times, mainly due to Kogoro’s more emotional connection to the case. Thankfully, he still gets to shine in the finale, unravelling the villains’ rather convoluted motives with his signature clever deductions.

As a casual fan, I can’t say how ‘One-Eyed Flashback’ stacks up against past Conan films. However, as a standalone, it’s a solid blend of mystery and icy action that has certainly rekindled my interest in the franchise. Longtime fans will likely find even more to appreciate in this extra dose of crime-solving antics, so you can probably add an extra half-star to my score.
