‘Papa’ (爸爸) is a 2024 Hong Kong crime drama written and directed by Philip Yung.
Based on the real-life 2010 Heung Wo Street Murder, the film revolves around a café owner who grapples with devastating loss and survivor’s guilt after his mentally ill son commits a tragic act. The cast includes Lau Ching-Wan, Jo Kuk, Dylan So, Lainey Hung, Alan Yeung, and Helen Tam.
Synopsis: Ruan Yongnian (Lau Ching-Wan), who lost his family, returned to the tea restaurant as usual to open up, making himself feel that everything is still the same. The kitchen where his wife Jinyan (Jo Kuk) prepares breakfast, the computer desk where his son Houming (Dylan So) plays online games, the three-colour cat “Sanhua” adopted by his daughter Houen (Lainey Hung), and the Happy Valley Tea Restaurant where the family has dinner together. Blood relatives took away the love of his life. Yongnian can neither hate the living nor forget the dead. Even though he is separated from his son by a window, Yongnian works harder than ever to live like a “father”. [© Far East Films]
