4K UHD, Blu-ray & DVD release: ‘Demon Pond’

The Criterion Collection are bringing the 1979 Japanese fantasy romance ‘Demon Pond’ (夜叉ヶ池) to US 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on October 15, 2024.

Based on the play by Izumi Kyoka and directed by Masahiro Shinoda, the film revolves around a lone traveller who stumbles upon a remote village and becomes engulfed in a whirlpool of myth, mystery, and magic. The cast includes Tamasaburo Bando, Go Kato, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Hisashi Igawa, Fujio Tokita, Hatsuo Yamaya, and Dai Kanai.

Synopsis: When a lone traveller (Tsutomu Yamazaki) stumbles upon a remote, drought-stricken village, he finds himself engulfed in a whirlpool of myth, mystery, and magic: in a nearby pond reside spirits who hold the fate of the town’s inhabitants—including lovers Akira (Go Kato) and Yuri (Tamasaburo Bando)—in their hands.
