‘A Man of the People’ (邓小平小道) is a 2022 Chinese biopic directed by Lei Xianhe and Lu Qi.

Based on the life of Chinese revolutionary leader, military commander and statesman Deng Xiaoping, the film recounts the period in Xiaoping’s life when he was forced to retire from all his positions and work in a factory. The cast includes Lu Qi, Yu Hui, Zhang Yamei, Zhang Yiwen, Zhao Hengxuan, and Song Yuncheng.

Synopsis: During the Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping was sacked and sent to Jiangxi. For his safety, a factory master opened up an opportunity for him. For three years and four months, he went to work in a factory along the same trail every day, rain or shine, and later generations called it the “Deng Xiaoping Trail” and “Xiaoping Trail”. While insisting on doing his labour, he also took care of his eldest son who was paralyzed in bed. At a critical moment, a female worker in the workshop rescued him with a bowl of brown sugar water. He went deep into the grassroots to perceive the suffering of the masses, and came to the great conclusion that “poverty is not socialism”, which laid an ideological foundation for his reform and opened the door for his comeback.
