‘Migawari Mission’ (身代わり忠臣蔵) is a 2024 Japanese period comedy directed by Hayato Kawai.

Based on the novel ‘Migawari Chushingura’ by Akihiro Dobashi, the film revolves around a monk who has to take the place of his deceased older brother to avoid his family being destroyed by the shogun. The cast includes Tsuyoshi Muro, Eita Nagayama, Haruna Kawaguchi, Kento Hayashi, and Kazuki Kitamura.

Synopsis: The hated lord Uenosuke Kira (Tsuyoshi Muro) is slain in Edo Castle and sent to the afterlife! The Ako clan leader who killed him naturally committed seppuku. However, the Kira family, which has lost its lord, is also threatened by a plot by the Shogunate to end the family’s existence! In order to get the family out of such a great crisis, his younger brother Kosho (Tsuyoshi Muro), a monk who looks exactly like Uenosuke, takes up the challenge of an unprecedented “substitution mission” to deceive the Shogunate. He also conspires with Oishi Kuranosuke (Eita Nagayama), a retainer of the Ako clan who was supposed to be his enemy, to prevent a raid. [© Far East Films]

‘Migawari Mission’ opens across Japan on February 9, 2024.
