Blu-ray & 4K UHD release: ‘Farewell My Concubine’

The Criterion Collection are bringing the 1993 Chinese-Hong Kong historical drama ‘Farewell My Concubine’ (霸王别姬) to US Blu-ray and 4K UHD on July 23, 2024.
Directed by Chen Kaige, the film chronicles the troubled relationships between two lifelong friends who meet at an opera training school in Peking in 1924. The cast includes Leslie Cheung, Zhang Fengyi, Gong Li, Jiang Wenli, Ge You, and Lu Qi.
Synopsis: Abandoned by his prostitute mother in 1920, Douzi was raised by a theatre troupe. There he meets Shitou and over the following years, the two develop an act entitled “Farewell My Concubine” that brings them fame and fortune. When Shitou marries Juxian, Douzi becomes jealous, and the beginnings of the acting duo’s explosive breakup and tragic fall take root.
