Blu-ray release: ‘Big Time Gambling Boss’

MVD Entertainment Group are bringing the 1968 Japanese crime drama ‘Big Time Gambling Boss’ (博奕打ち 総長賭博) to US Blu-ray on January 3, 2023.

Directed by Kosaku Yamashita, the film revolves around a gang member who is named the successor of his clan but soon finds himself facing internal opposition. The cast includes Koji Tsuruta, Tomisaburo Wakayama, Hiroshi Nawa, Nobuo Kaneko, Hiroko Sakuramachi, Hideto Kagawa, and Michiyo Hattori.

Synopsis: Set in Tokyo in the thirties, where gang boss Arakawa is ill and a successor must be named. The choice falls on Nakai, but being an outsider he refuses and suggests senior clansman Matsuda instead. But Matsuda is in jail and the elders won’t wait for his release, so they appoint the younger and more malleable Ishido to take the reins. Clan honor and loyalties are severely tested when Matsuda is released, resulting in an increasingly violent internal strife.
