Tsui Hark will be returning to direct the third film in the ‘Detective Dee’ franchise, which so far includes ‘Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame’ (2010) and ‘Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon’ (2013).
Tentatively titled ‘Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings’, the third film will tell the story of Detective Dee investigating a series of strange events happening during the Tang Dynasty in China including the palace’s dragon sculptures coming alive and the appearance of evil warriors wearing ghost masks and foxes that talk in human language.
Zhang Jialu, who wrote the scripts for the first two ‘Detective Dee’ films, will return as screenwriter.
The only cast member announced so far is Kenny Lin (Lin Gengxin). The actor has collaborated with Tsui Hark previously in ‘The Taking of Tiger Mountain’, ‘Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon’, ‘Sword Master’ (with Tsui as producer) as well as the upcoming ‘Journey to the West: Demon Chapter’, in which he plays Sun Wukong the Monkey King.
‘Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings’ is scheduled for release in 2018.
