Hong Kong film and television actor Ku Feng (谷峰) has passed away at the age of 94.

Born Chan Sze-Man in Shanghai in 1930, Feng studied in Beijing and was passionate about performing from an early age. He loved to sing and travelled to different venues to perform, as well as working as a dancer in Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park.

Feng began working in film in the late 1950s, but it wasn’t until he joined Shaw Brothers in 1965 that his career really began to take off. He went on to appear in numerous films for the studio, with notable roles in movies such as ‘Have Sword, Will Travel’ (1969), ‘The New One-Armed Swordsman’ (1971), ‘The Deadly Duo’ (1971), ‘The Master of Kung Fu’ (1973), and ‘Flying Guillotine II’ (1978).

After Shaw Brothers reduced production in the mid-1980s, Feng continued working in Hong Kong and appeared in films like ‘Chicken and Duck Talk’ (1988), ‘Cageman’ (1992), and ‘Hail the Judge’ (1994). In 1982, he won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 19th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan for his role in ‘Tiger Killer’. A year later, he won the same award at the 20th Golden Horse Awards for his role in ‘The Guilty Girl’.

In the 1990s, Feng joined TVB and focused mainly on television work. Some of his most popular series included ‘Eunuch & Carpenter’ (1993), ‘The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber’ (1994), and ‘Forensic Heroes’ (2006). His final appearance was in ‘Forensic Heroes II’ in 2011, after which he announced his retirement.

Ku Feng was one of Hong Kong’s great unsung talents who left behind a huge legacy of fantastic work. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.
