Yeon Sang-ho’s ‘Train to Busan’ has just beaten the record set by ‘Cold War II’ earlier this year (HK$ 66,240,000) to become the all-time highest grossing Asian film at the Hong Kong box office. In 34 days of release, the Korean blockbuster has taken HK$ 66,300,000 and is currently the 16th highest grossing film in HK.
Since its release, the film has set a number of records:
– In 3 days, it grossed over HK$ 10,000,000 and became the fastest Korean film in history to cross that mark in HK.
– On day 4 of release, it broke the 14-year record held by ‘My Sassy Girl’ (HK$ 14,000,000) as HK’s all-time highest grossing Korean film.
– Within weeks, it overtook Brad Pitt’s ‘World War Z’ (HK$ 42,000,000) to become the all-time highest grossing zombie film in HK.
Because of the film’s immense popularity, its animated prequel ‘Seoul Station’ was also recently released in Hong Kong cinemas and is one of the very few Korean animated films to be given a wide release there.
