This highly acclaimed romantic drama proves once again that Hong Kong cinema can be very subtle and is far more varied than some would have the public believe.

‘Echoes Of The Rainbow’ is full of the balancing act between cliché and skilled drama, complete with solid performances throughout.

‘Eight Taels Of Gold’ rewards those not looking for emotional fireworks or melodramatic denouements.

Instead of just relying on popular new-wave gimmicks, Sammo pushes each of the actors to their limit and, even though there is liberal use of stunt doubles, the effect is impressive to behold.

‘Now You See Love… Now You Don’t’ is engrossing and eventually quite touching.

‘The Blacksheep Affair’ is an exhilarating action film that firmly puts Vincent Zhao on the map as a possible successor to Jet Li.

There’s some well-developed comic moments that certainly raise the odd smile, while the atmosphere is infectious.

This slice of social-realism is about as far from the stereotypical Shaw Brothers output as can be imagined, though that should not deter viewers looking out for this well-acted, well-paced piece of Hong Kong cinema.

‘To Err Is Humane’ provides further proof of Sammo Hung’s versatility and makes a pleasant addition to his vast filmography.
