Amusing (though never crude) and nostalgic (though never overly sentimental), Riley Yip’s gentle ‘coming-of-age’ comedy/drama earns a major recommendation.

A formulaic plot that doesn’t exactly inspire viewing is lifted from tedium by some inventive and exciting action sequences.

‘Legend Of The Fist’ is a film that promises so much but delivers far less, especially considering this is a collaboration between Donnie Yen and Andrew Lau.

Although it could be argued that there is some well-executed action at the end, the fact of the matter is that it comes too late to succeed in entertaining.

The high standards of satire and sentimentality that had previously been attained have been sacrificed in a bid to be ’more accessible’ – a double-edged sword if ever there was one.

With musings on death, love, nostalgia and responsibility, ‘McDull, Prince De La Bun’ is a mature work that provides entertainment with enough substance to appeal to every generation.

Samson Chiu can be congratulated for taking a bold step in a new direction while still retaining much of the gentle punch that is associated with the brand.

‘Pork Of Music’ is probably the best of the series, full of beautiful moments, delicate satire and heart-warming artwork.

‘Motorway’ is a stripped down action thriller that dispenses with such luxuries as sub-plots to concentrate fully on the battle between cops and robbers.

If the more ambitious nature of the production can be ignored and the awkward jingoism put to one side, ‘Mr. Cinema’ can be enjoyed as a well-performed, sometimes captivating film.

Animation may still prove to be an acquired taste for some while Hong Kong animation may prove even more so, but ‘My Life As McDull’ is recommended to young and old alike.

‘Now You See Love… Now You Don’t’ is engrossing and eventually quite touching.
