While the animation and action are definitely well handled, the numerous anime movie clichés prevent it from ever progressing beyond anything other than filler.

This isn’t a perfect film, but it’s got more imagination and energy than most of the rom-com genre efforts of recent years put together.

‘My School Mate, the Barbarian’ is an unusual film that centres on a world of youths that rarely touches that of the adult realm. If the viewer can get used to this, they should enjoy the rest of the duration.

A delightful adventure that has belly laughs weaved together with the odd moment of social commentary.
